Hamartiology: what we believe to be true about sin
- God is eternal Joh 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
- All things were created by God. John 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
- God is a Spirit John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.
- God is triune, being three distinct persons, while also being one in essence. 1 John 5:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
- God is self-existent John 5:26 For as the Father hath life in himself; so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself;
- God is omniscient Psalms 139:4 For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether.
- God is omnipotent Revelation 19:6 And I heard as it were the voice of a great multitude, and as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of mighty thunderings, saying, Alleluia: for the Lord God omnipotent reigneth.
- God is omnipresent Jeremiah 23:24 Can any hide himself in secret places that I shall not see him? saith the LORD. Do not I fill heaven and earth? saith the LORD.
- God is not willing that any should go to hell. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
- Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God Matthew 16:16 And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.
- Jesus was born of a virgin Luke 1:26-27 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, (27) To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary.
- Jesus is fully man and fully God John 1:14 And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
- Jesus is incapable of sin Hebrews 4:15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
- Jesus took all of God’s wrath toward sin, upon the cross 2 Corinthians 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.
- Jesus blood washes the sinner clean. Ephesians 1:7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
- Jesus rose from the dead defeating death, hell, and the grave. Matthew 28:6 He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.
- Jesus started and lead the first church John 3:22 After these things came Jesus and his disciples into the land of Judaea; and there he tarried with them, and baptized.
- Jesus ascended up into Heaven where he sits at the right hand of the Father Hebrews 1:3 Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;
- The Holy Spirit guides the believer in all truth John 16:13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.
- The Holy Spirit indwells the believer at the moment of Salvation. 1 Corinthians 6:19 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
- The Holy Spirit can be grieved or quenched by the believer, but not removed. Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
- The Bible is God’s revelation of himself to man Ephesians 3:4 Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ.
- The bible was written by holy men of God, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. 2 Peter 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.
- The bible is inerrant and infallible Proverbs 30:5 Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.
- The 66 books contained in the bible are the complete and entire cannon of scripture Psalms 119:89 LAMED. For ever, O LORD, thy word is settled in heaven. 2 Peter 1:19 We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts:
- The king James version, is the only true authorized version for the English speaking people.
- Angels are created being Psalms 148:2, 5 Praise ye him, all his angels: praise ye him, all his hosts. (5) Let them praise the name of the LORD: for he commanded, and they were created.
- Satan is a fallen angel Isaiah 14:12 How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
- Demons are also fallen angels Matthew 25:41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels:
- Mankind was created by God Genesis 1:27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
- Mankind was created with a living soul Genesis 2:7 And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
- Since the fall of humanity, each person is born with a sin nature Romans 7:23 But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.
- Man is made up of 3 parts: body, soul, and spirit 1 Thessalonians 5:23 And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
- Each person will spend eternity in one of two places: Heaven or Hell Luke 16:22-23 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; (23) And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.
Hamartiology: what we believe to be true about sin
- Sin is anything that defies or opposes the will of God James 4:17 Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.
- Sin has changed the entire world from God’s original intent for it, to what is has become today
- Sin kills the soul Ephesians 2:1 And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;
- Sin has a price that must be paid Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.
- God desires that all people be saved 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
- Jesus Christ paid our sin debt with his shed blood upon the cross Colossians 1:14 In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins:
- Salvation is obtained by grace through faith Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
- The end times will begin with the rapture of all the saved 1 Thessalonians 4:17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.
- The earth will endure a 7 year tribulation immediately after the rapture Daniel 9:27 And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.
- During the tribulation on earth, the saved will be at the judgment seat of Christ and the marriage of the lamb Revelation 19:7 Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready.
- The end of the tribulation will be marked with the 2nd coming of Christ Revelation 19:11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war.
- Jesus Christ will rule and reign on the earth for 1000 years Revelation 20:6 Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.
- God will create a new heaven and a new earth Revelation 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.
- The church is a group of baptized believers called together to fulfill the commission of Christ Matthew 28:18-20 - And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
- The church was started by Jesus Christ John 4:1-3 When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, (2) (Though Jesus himself baptized not, but his disciples,) (3) He left Judaea, and departed again into Galilee.
- The church is local and visible, not universal or invisible Ephesians 5:23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body.
- The church has 2 biblical offices: the pastor, and the deacon 1 Timothy 3:1 This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. 1 Timothy 3:8 Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;
- The church has 2 ordinances: Baptism and the Lord’s Supper Romans 6:4 Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. 1 Corinthians 11:26 For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.
